Primary Children's Hospital

On our way home!!!

His special diabetes bear "Rufus"!

I have no idea what this toy is, but Jake LOVED it! Thanks Melanie and Bill!

Daddy giving Jake his insulin shot. They are both so brave!

Our nurse Jen, teaching Jake how to give a shot.

This was Jake's first nigh in the hospital. I think for the first time in months, he finally slept peacefully.

One of the MANY blood sugar tests in the hospital.

Even though he was stuck in the hospital, he had plenty of stuff to do to keep him busy!

Well! A lot has been happening here at the Mackey home. As you probably know, our sweet Jake was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last Friday. We spent the weekend at the hospital with him learning everything we could about how to take care of him. Life is 100 percent different now. He has to get his blood sugar checked (a finger prick) at least 5 times a day and about as many insulin shots. He is being such a trooper. He truly is amazing us. He takes it all in his stride. He doesn't complain or make a big deal out of his new life. He just knows that this is how he is going to be healthy now. It is taking a lot out of Josh and me as far as worrying constantly and wondering if we are doing all the right things to keep him safe. We had a bit of a scare on Monday night where his blood sugar dropped so low that we had to call the paramedics because he was passing out. Thankfully, Josh was able to keep him talking until the paramedics arrived and they just checked him out and made sure he was ok. It was one of the scariest moments of our lives for sure. But, now we are more aware of the symptoms and are more prepared. Its a balancing act right now as far as his blood sugars are concerned and will hopefully level out in the next couple of weeks. Until then, keep your prayers coming strong to help us keep our little boy happy and healthy!

We are keeping your family in our prayers. Jake is growing up isn't he? But he is still a little boy with a big responsibility. The pictures you took are wonderful.
It looks like he is in good hands at Primary Children's. We love you and are ready to help when needed...

Isn't it wonderful to live in a day where these things can be controlled and we have the medicine and doctors available? I hope all is well, hang in there :)

Oh my goodness! Your worlds have been turned upside down for a little while, but fortunately you will learn what needs to be done to get it all under control. None the less it is scarey for everyone.

just a side note, we are going to be out in April. Isaac wants to get baptized out there so all his family can be there at his Baptism. I'll let you know when time gets closer, but we would love to have you there.

Ah man... poor little Jake. That's no fun. One of my good friends since birth, pretty much, has diabetes. I remember how cool I thought it was because she got to bring juice and crackers and stuff to school to snack on to make sure that her blood sugar didn't get too low. Occasionally she'd even share her snacks with me! SCORE! hehe That must be a huge adjustment--all the shots and monitoring. But you guys are great parents. No need to worry that you're not doing everything right because you ARE.

Just curious-- what were the symptoms? I wouldn't even know what to look for. I'm glad he's okay! Good luck with everything! Love you guys!

Hi I'm Becky, Brenda's sister in Tennessee. I checked out your web site and learned your son was diagnosed with diabetes type I. I'm a school nurse and that is what I do...take care of diabetic kids at school. He is so blessed to have you as his mom and Dad to help him through this. Maybe one day he will be fitted with a pump. Most of our diabetics use one here, but everyone is different One step at a time...God bless you and your family. I've met Josh and maybe one day I'll meet the rest of the family. My blog address is www.mylittlehive.blogspot.com

Mandi, I just broke down in tears when I read that your sweet baby has diabetes. What were the symptoms you noticed on him? Landen's sister (brooke in California) has a brother with type 1 diabetes. Their mom Debbie is the nicest person you'll ever meet, and she would be happy to talk to you. If you have AIM, her name on there is DA4LIF and I can give you her number if you'd like also. (I don't want to post it here, though).

My prayers are with your whole family. I just don't know what to say. It makes all my problems seem non-existant. I love you. Please know I'm here if you want to talk. Also, please call me or email if you want me to ask Thong anything about anything else.
